If your doctor has recommended a HMV – also known as non-invasive ventilation (NIV)—or if you’re hearing about it for the first time—you might have questions. Don’t worry, we’re here to walk you through it.
So what is it, exactly?
HMV delivers breathing support through a mask or mouthpiece—no surgery or tubes required. It’s most often used at home by people with conditions like COPD and neuromuscular disorders.
Why it matters
HMV can reduce the effort your lungs need to breathe, help you sleep better, and keep you out of the hospital. Many of our patients say they feel more rested and have more energy during the day once they start therapy.
What to expect from our Respiratory Team:
- We bring the equipment to you and help set everything up.
- One of our respiratory therapists walks you through how to use it.
You’ll have access to ongoing support—including real-time coaching if you ever need adjustments.
We’re here every step of the way to make sure you’re comfortable, informed, and confident.
